Many of the amusement parks in Pennsylvania offer season passes for their guests.  In most cases these passes can be a considerable savings over purchases single day tickets if you visit the park three or more times.  Check out each park’s website below for details on their 2012 Season Pass offerings.

Conneaut Lake Park – Season passes are not available to Conneaut Lake Park.  Check the park’s website here for ticket information.

Delgrosso’s Amusement Park – Delgrosso’s is a free admission amusement park that offers season passes for rides and the waterpark.  Pass holders can bring a buddy for free on Tuesdays. A discount is being offered on the passes but no end date is listed.  Visit the park’s website for information here.

Dorney Park and Wild Water Kingdom – Dorney has a buy now don’t pay until March plan in place for their season passes until 12/31/11.  The regular season pass includes admission to all Dorney Park and Wild Water events plus free parking. A platinum pass is available that gives you access to all Cedar Fair parks (with a few exceptions) in the US.  Platinum passes do not include seasonal events at some parks. See the Dorney Park website here for details.

Dutch Wonderland – Dutch Wonderland has discount prices prior to 1/1/12.  Dutch Wonderland season passes include entry to all Dutch Wonderland events. Dutch Wonderland and Hersheypark combo passes (Gold passes) are still available for 2012. See website here for complete season pass details.

Hersheypark – Hersheypark has discount pass prices prior to 1/1/12.  Hersheypark Season passes include entry to all Hersheypark events and free parking. Dutch Wonderland and Hersheypark combo passes (Gold passes) are still available for 2012.  A Discovery Pass upgrade is also available that includes other Hershey attractions. See website here for complete details.

Idlewild – Idlewild & Soakzone has discount pass prices if you buy 4 or more.  They also offer a bring-a-buddy free day for season pass holders.  See website for details here.

Kennywood – Season passes to Kennywood are available at a discounted price through 12-31-11 and are further discounted if you buy 4 or more.  Season passes to Kennywood include regular season events but do NOT include Phantom Fright Nights. They do include buddy discount events. Visit their website here for details.

Knoebels – Knoebels is a free entry park and they do not offer season passes.  They do offer discounts on ride tickets and wristbands at certain times.  Visit their website here for details.

Lakemont Park – No information is available at this time.

Sesame Place – Sesame Place is offering a discount on their season passes through 12/31/11.  They have different types of passes which include free admission or discounts to SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and other parks or just to Sesame Place.  The passes include free parking and regular season admission only.  Choose carefully from their website here.

Waldameer – Though Waldameer is a free admission park, they do offer season passes to cover the cost of rides.  Waldameer is the only park in Pennsylvania to limit the number of season passes it sells, so make sure you get one early if you want one since they sold out last year.  Visit the website here for details.

Here is a ride that didn’t have a single rider the whole time I was at Delgrosso’s in summer 2011 so I’m not surprised that it is on the auction block.  The Super Spiral is a Super Round up flat ride which at one time could be seen at every carnival and festival.  We don’t see them too much around here anymore and I guess we won’t be seeing it at Delgrosso’s either. You can see the sale listing for the ride here.

Hmm…. First the Flying Bobs, now the Super Spiral. Two rides gone in the same general area… could Delgrosso’s be planning something big for 2012?  We’ll have to wait and see!

I’m so glad I visited the park to get to see the Flying Bobs before they were replaced.  I’d never seen a ride of that type before in person.  Delgrosso’s has shown the empty spot where the Bobs were on its Facebook page and posted a teaser photo of what Santa has brought Buddy Bear. Guess we’ll have to wait for the official word though someone has posted a guess on Facebook.  Check out the news here.

Kids Kingdom entrance and ticket booths at Delgrosso's

Delgrosso’s Amusement Park is one of those great parks that has a special section devoted to smaller children.  Their kids area is called Kid’s Kingdom and it features rides that are available to nearly all children.  My one complaint is that many of the rides do not accomodate parents so if your child is very young or is a hesitant rider, you may have trouble getting them on the rides alone.

Delgrosso’s Website features a ride/height listing here and each ride sign at the park posts who can ride it.  This information is not in their park brochure.

Here are the rides in the Kid’s Kingdom with their height requirements:

Whale ride - under 52 inches, no parents

Boat Ride - under 52 inches, no parents

Helicopters - under 52 inches, no parents

Turtle ride - under 52 inches, no parents

Elephant ride - must be under 52 inches, no parents

Dizzy Dragons - over 36 inches tall with adult, 42 inches w/o adult - only ride parents can ride in Kid's Kingdom

Corvette Race Cars, under 52 inches, no parents

Fire Trucks, must be under 52 inches, no parents

I unfortunately don’t have a good picture of the Kiddie Carousel, but it too has a height limit of under 52 inches but parents can accompany the child to hold them.

There are other rides at Delgrosso’s that younger guests can enjoy outside Kid’s Kingdom as well depending on their height.  Rides guests 36 inches and taller can ride are the full size carousel, scrambler, flying bobs, train and wacky worm.  Free fall is available for those 38 inches and taller.  For a full listing of rides at Delgrosso’s with their height requirements and limitations, check here.

People welcome, pets are not.

Pets are not allowed at Delgrosso’s Amusement Park so you will have to leave Fluffy and Fido at home.  You can see this info in their Guest Guide on their website under “Rules and Regulations” at the bottom.

Welcome to Delgrosso's!!!

A million thanks to Delgrosso’s Amusement Park for having internet access for your visitors.  It’s because of you that I can be writing this trip report while enjoying Murf’s amazing potato salad – thank you!!!!

My "office" at Delgrosso's Murf's Kitchen

So, I made the trip from Harrisburg, PA to Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton PA today.  Construction is normal for PA as anyone who travels here knows and I hit my fair share, but still made the trip in just over 2 hours with a bathroom/directions check break.

Plenty of Free Parking at Delgrosso's

I drove into Tipton and turned left at the light right into the FREE parking area.  A very nice parking attendant and I talked for awhile about what Hersheypark was like and what Delgrosso’s was like.  There really is no comparison.  Delgrosso’s feels in a way like a 1970′s Hersheypark with the tudor design and western themes in some areas but that is about where the comparison ends.

2011 Admission Options

This is a free admission park, with free parking, a ticket/wristband riding set-up and reasonably priced, great food.  Hersheypark in the 1970′s didn’t have any of those things – except maybe free parking.  I didn’t drive then so I don’t remember.

Tipton Water Works - pool side

When you come into the parking area you are behind the Tipton Waterworks and you cross over the road through town to the ride side of the park.  The parking attendant told me they are very strict about clothing being worn on the park side, no swimsuits on the ride side.  They stop you at the bridge.  Hersheypark could take a lesson here as I’ve seen one too many too small bathing suits in non-water areas of their park.

Pressed Pennies at Delgrosso's

First thing I did was press the four pennies at the Hines Auto Care Booth (kind of like an information booth) to add to my collection.  All turned out clear and wonderful.

Crazy Mouse at Delgrosso's

I of course took tons of pictures which I will put in later – I can’t really see which ones are blurry or not due to the sunshine out here – but I was surprised by the number and variety of the rides here.  My original thought was “Well, this is a good little kids park” and then I saw the Crazy Mouse.  Wow, that is a ride!  Lots of fun packed into a small space.

Infant Care and First Aid in the Kids Kingdom

Delgrosso’s has a Kids Kingdom section which is partially blocked off for little kids.  There is no smoking in this section and they have one of the best infants areas around – changing tables, nursing areas and HIGH CHAIRS!!!!  Oh, how much I’d give for a decent high chair at Knoebels or Hersheypark.  (One thing to note is that because they have this special area there are no changing facilities in the other bathrooms near the Kids Kingdom, but there are some in the other sections of the park.)

Flying Pink Elephants

One thing I found disappointing in the Kids Kingdom is that very few of the rides can have an adult accompany the child.  With small toddlers often it is necessary to have an adult ride to keep them seated.  I do think this will raise the age that you can bring kids here successfully to about 1 1/2 or 2 depending on y0ur child.

Dizzy Dragons - these guys are big!

There is a fascinating ride here call the Dizzy Dragons.  I’m not sure I could ride them and not get claustrophobic.  Essentially they are a tall teacup like ride shaped like a dragon and only open on one side.  Amazing to look at but I think I’d be scared to death (admittedly I’m a wuss…)

Something I’d like to applaud Delgrosso’s for is having photo IDs for their employees.  I know how easy it is to pick up park shirts at the Salvation Army (I have several for Hersheypark) so it could be very easy for people to prey on children if a shirt is the only thing that distinguishes them as an employee.  Bravo for Delgrosso’s!!!

Flying Bobs

You will see a lot of old and familiar rides here at Delgrosso’s but you will also see variations on rides that I haven’t seen nearby – such as having Flying Bobs instead of the traditional Himalya.  The Wacky Worm is a great kids coaster flat ride to get them used to the idea before they hit the Crazy Mouse which is a variation on the Wild Mouse rides found in other parks.  Large roundish cars that rotate and go up and down hills make this different than the whip-fast corners on the Wild Mouse at Hersheypark.  The Crazy Mouse looks like lots more fun.

Murf's Kitchen Menu 2011

The food here is terrific and reasonably priced.  I’ve spent under $10 and gotten a slice of pizza, a decent sized soda (Pepsi products here), a hamburger with the works and a side of Murf’s famous potato salad.  The pizza was fresh and hot (not microwaved like it is at Hersheypark) and the burger had ripe tomato and chopped onion – and it was hot too.   Before I leave I’ll be sampling the black raspberry ice cream – or maybe teaberry – and that’ll take me to about $12.50 in money spent.  Not too shabby.

So how is the potato salad?  Great.  It is creamy, cold and delicious.  A little mustard, a little celery, some mayo and fully cooked potatoes that aren’t mushy.  Great with a burger – or without a burger.  Or with funnel cakes and strawberries with whipped cream (yep they have those) or sloppy joe fries (yep, they have those too!)

I’ll post additional articles on the various rides, ticket prices, food options and all of that later, but I thought it would be great to post something actually FROM Delgrosso’s – and I’ve done it.  I’m heading up the road to Lakemont Park to ride the oldest roller coaster – Leap the Dips.  I hope.  I’m afraid of heights!

Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in Tiption, PA is one of the great family owned parks we have here in this state.  I will be making my first trip there this weekend and hope to have lots of great info and photos for you soon, but if you are like me and have never been there you can now see what Delgrosso’s is all about in this video.

Check out the kiddie turtle ride – a classic!

Along with fellow PA family park Knoebels Amusement Resort, Delgrosso’s Amusement Park has announced a new smoking policy on their website.  They are restricting smoking to certain areas of the park which are shown on their online map.  You can see the details here.

We’ve got the best Amusement Parks right here in Pennsylvania to visit and the season is officially starting this weekend in many parks.  To view the opening date for YOUR favorite park (or perhaps a new park you’d like to visit) check out our list below.

Please note that parks with water features may not fully open until later in the season – usually Memorial Day weekend – so be sure to click on the name of the park to go to the calendar page on their website for more details on what activities will be available.

COASTER-net has posted some winter photos of Delgrosso’s Crazy Mouse.  All those bright colors against the snow make you think spring!  Check them out here.
